A survey by FRP Advisory has found that over 50 retail groups fear that their businesses may not survive the next 12 months amid a sharp rise in costs when the Government scales back its support for businesses' energy bills from April. In a survey of 250 retailers with at least 100 staff, 22% were not confident they would be solvent by the end of next year, while 60% cited rising energy costs as the biggest cost pressure in the months ahead. Phil Reynolds, at FRP, said: "Inflation is pushing up operating costs and dampening consumer confidence, with the looming recession likely to ensure that conditions remain challenging for some time to come." Clare Kennedy, at AlixPartners, a restructuring firm, said companies were "feeling the pinch" but that the economy had not yet been affected by extreme stress levels.
