Derek Cribb, head of the Association of Independent Professionals and the Self-Employed, has warned the Chancellor that many contractors will not be able to survive if their taxes go up – with many having received no support from the Government during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mr Cribb says Mr Sunak will find it hard to make the case that the self-employed should pay more to “fill the coffers that have been emptied out into other people’s pockets.” Elsewhere, however, Prof Judith Freedman from the University of Oxford calls for the alignment of self-employed workers’ taxes with normal employees – arguing the tax system is the wrong way to reward risk. She has also called for pensioners to pay National Insurance, although she admits that the idea will be unpopular.
