‘Worst-case’ freight worries revealed in Gove letter


Freight firms and hauliers have reacted with concern to claims by Michael Gove that if businesses do not prepare for extra bureaucracy when the Brexit transition period expires, two-day delays could result at key ports such as Dover. A leaked letter from Mr Gove revealed that if between 30% and 50% of trucks did not have the correct paperwork, a “lack of capacity to hold unready trucks at French ports” could see traffic reduced to 60% to 80% of normal amounts. Mr Gove also warned that police will turn lorries away from Kent unless they have an “access permit” to enter the county from January, creating what Logistics UK called an “internal UK border.”
